Toyota's new airless powder coating atomizer incorporates a novel method of reducing the environmental impact of the manufacturing process to aid in this effort. The Japanese automaker announced on Thursday that the new technology will reduce emissions across the company by approximately 7% and achieve a coating efficiency of 95%, an improvement from 60-70%. Not only is the system better for the environment, but it is also better for business. Before diving into the new technology, it's important to understand what happens during the traditional painting process. A standard air paint atomizer pushes the paint onto the vehicle's body with the help of aerodynamic force. As a result of the paint particles bouncing off the surface and into the air, they are dispersed throughout the surrounding area. Toyota invented a way to use static electricity to move from the nozzle to the vehicle surface, which they implemented in their airless system, powder coating systems. As paint flows through the static electricity, it is charged in a way that propels the particles toward the vehicle's body. Because there is no air involved, it greatly reduces the amount of scattered paint particles in the air. Meanwhile, the paint coats more quickly and evenly. Toyota's technology is based on a new cylindrical paint sprayer nozzle with 600 special grooves, which was developed by Toyota. The tip rotates in order to generate centrifugal force, which channels the paint through and charges the painting particles with static electricity. In reality, the paint spins through the nozzle, where it is charged by static electricity, which then propels the paint toward the body in a highly efficient manner. Toyota also realized that the charge would change as the nozzle moved closer and further away from the vehicle body. Engineers were able to solve the problem by using constant voltage control and maintaining a distance of just under four inches between the sprayer and the body. As the technology is implemented in manufacturing facilities around the world, it will provide another significant advantage: the technology is smaller, which will allow the automaker to build more compact production lines.
