The Converse Fire Department received a donation from BASF Converse to buy six bulletproof vests and several emergency kits that include tools like tourniquets. It was equipment that they needed," BASF Converse Site Manager Jerome Kirkland said. "They're also emergency first responders, so when different things happen in the community, they need to make sure that they have the proper equipment to be able to help those in the community." Firefighters are often on the front lines of emergency situations alongside law enforcement officers. "The old saying is, 'If you need something, call the fire department,'" Converse Fire's Assistant Chief Chris Weathersbee said. "We do just about anything that we're called upon to do." Weathersbee says they serve four schools in Spartanburg County School District 3, and will be able to use these vests to respond to a potential active shooter situation. "We had done some training at beginning of the year and it let us know we were really not equipped for our duties as a rescue task force," he said.He says these bulletproof vests will help protect their own firefighters and allow them to get into a scene faster. "If they know they have the suspect in an area or they have the suspect down, someone needs to get in and if we've got victims, get in fast, treat them and get them out," Weathersbee said. He says this could make the difference in saving lives as they work in conjunction with law enforcement. “We would go on scene as long as the sheriff’s office, we would have police there, they’ve cleared us to go in or they know it’s a safe environment to go in as well," he said. "Then that’s when we would don the equipment and we would already be prepared to go in and treat.” |
